My first assignment as a Community Producer was as Lead Camera Operator on The Cyclone Variety Show. There were several guests on the show, including comics, actors, and an extremely versatile singer/songwriter/guitarist named Guitaro 5000. This was an hour-long show that aired Friday, August 30th, from 7:00PM – 8:00PM on BRIC’s Free Speech TV and was available worldwide on the Internet.
The directors called for a limited set of shots, primarily centered shots that were more factual than creative. It was a worthwhile learning experience, even though my creative eye would have framed the shots radically different from what I was called to capture. Taking direction on set is a necessary skill that requires humility. You simply do as told and leave the diva attitude at home.
