The promotional poster for the super fight between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is absolutely brilliant. The catch phrase is The One, an amazing play on words. I can interpret the concept at least three ways, perhaps four ways. I can’t say if the design team had in mind the same interpretation I have, I can only say they did an excellent job of pushing a great concept.
Here’s the back story: Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez are both undefeated boxers and international superstars. They have no losses and they both claim to be the best. This is a high stakes fight where The One has tremendous significance.
Here’s how I interpret the concept, without any insight from the design team:
The One could be interpreted as Mayweather suffering his first loss, making his record 44-1-26.
Alternatively, The One could be interpreted as “Canelo” Alvarez tasting defeat, moving his record to 42-1-(1)-30.
Finally, The One could be interpreted as the winner, whoever it is, being The One—the best boxer on the planet, number one.
It’s entirely possible the designers could have intended every one of the ideas I have above, or perhaps none of them. Nevertheless, it’s a great concept that makes you think, creatively.
